This Wilderness area was established in 1984 and contains approximately 37,440 rough acres with a major canyon and perennial stream (Tonto Creek) extending its entire length. Deep pools of water are often separated by impassable waterfalls. Elevations range from 3,000 feet along the lower end of Tonto Creek to 6,400 feet on Horse Mountain.
Spring and fall are ideal times to visit this area, however trails are rare and access is limited. A group size of no more than 15 people and no more than 15 head of pack or saddle animals of any type is enforced within this area yearlong.
The Hellsgate Wilderness area is among the most remote and difficult to access wilderness areas in the United States. A trail drops into Tonto Creek and traverses the canyon to the confluence of Tonto and Haigler Creeks. The Gate itself is an impressive drop to Tonto Creek as the water cut a 100+ foot deep path through a rock face. When the water is high in the Tonto, you can jump off the lower cliffs. While Tonto Creek is largely impassable above the gate, Haigler Creek can be walked upstream for miles.
We chose a spicy scent for this soap to match the spiciness of Hellsgate. It's a blend of freshness with a masculine "Old Spice Fresh" type of scent that bursts with notes of orange, lime, lily of the valley. Mint rounds out this scent with an earthy patchouli, mossy, and musky base.
