Coronado set out from Compostela in mid-1540 with nearly 400 Spaniards, 2,000 Mexican Indian allies, four Franciscan monks, and many family members, servants and slaves who were brave enough to explore the hostile region. He searched for Cibola, one of the legendary \"Cities of Gold\" that was rumored to be exist in the Southwest.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut truly he and all others came for \"\u003cstrong\u003eGlory, God, \u003c\/strong\u003eand\u003cstrong\u003e Gold\u003c\/strong\u003e\". \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHe found all three, along with a healthy dose of fear and death, deep in the Superstition Mountain range.
